2nd Lt. John E. "Jack" Thelen served in the US Marine Corps with VMF-111. Returning to Majuro in the Marshall Islands from a mission to Mille Island, Lt. Thelen's F4U-1 Corsair collided with another F4U-1 flown by Capt. Albert M. Blackmon. Both men were killed and only 2nd Lt. Thelen's body was recovered.
