Claire Harvey, 72, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016.

Celebration of life services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Home Coulter Road Chapel. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.

Judy Harvey, age 72, of Amarillo died peacefully at home on Nov. 9, 2016, of complications from dementia.

She was born Dec. 12, 1943, in Houston, and her parents, Eloise and Harold Argo, preceded her in death. Judy married Jim Harvey on Feb. 15, 1963, in Amarillo.

Judy attended school in Amarillo, graduating from Amarillo High School. After attending Amarillo College for two years, she completed a bachelor's degree at Texas Tech University in 1967 and a master's degree at University of Texas Permian Basin in 1975.

Judy began her career teaching elementary school in Lubbock Independent School District at Wheelock Elementary School for one year, continuing with Muleshoe ISD at Mary DeShazo Elementary School for five years, and with Andrews ISD at Devonian Elementary, Glorieta Elementary and Clearfork Elementary Schools for 30 years. Through these 36 years of teaching, Judy rejoiced in the daily growth of her students and eventually specialized in reading instruction. After retirement, Jim and Judy moved to Amarillo, where they resided until her death.

Judy's dedication to teaching was reflected by her involvement in Kappa Kappa Iota, a professional organization for educators, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a professional honorary society for women educators, serving as state research chairman and on the State Leadership Seminar.

Judy loved researching genealogy and completed extensive searches for her family. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Society of Mayflower Descendants and National Society Magna Charta Dames.

Judy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; a wonderful daughter and son in-law, Beth and Terry McNeill; three grandkids, Christin Killingsworth and husband Brian, Trevor McNeill and Kaitlen McNeill; a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Burnis Argo; a sister-in-law, Martha Hodges;
her stepmother-in-law, Inez Harvey; and her nephews, Jimmy Argo, John Argo, Rob Hodges and Andy Hodges. Judy and Jim's beloved son, Christopher James Harvey, has been missing since 1984.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to your local elementary school library or purchase a good book for those youngsters in your life and tell them it is because a special lady really believed reading is important. Nothing would please Judy
more.
