Tonya was the daughter of Thomas Sanders and Bunice Smith Sanders. She was educated in the Macon County School System and was a Class of 1991 graduate of D. F. Douglass High School in Montezuma, Georgia. She was a member of the New Life Ministries of Montezuma, Georgia under the leadership of Reverend Paul A. McFarland. She later joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Dooling, Georgia under the leadership of Pastor Jerry Sanders.
She was preceded in death by 1 sister, Jeanette Sanders and 2 brothers, Leonard Sanders and Marcale V. Sanders, step-mother, Eliza Beatrice Sanders, her maternal grandparents, Richard Smith Sr and Elizabeth Miller Smith and her paternal grandparents, A. C. Sanders and Gussie Sanders.

3 Daughters: Latedra Sanders, Kanedra Sanders and Markala Sanders.
Father: Thomas Sanders.
4 Sisters: Lisa C. Tuff, Angela Mathis(Willie), Latrina Sanders Hubbard(Timothy) and Marcia Sanders-Perry.
