Kevin Darnell Shorter of Savannah, GA, passed away Friday, December 19, 2003 at Memorial Medical Hospital. He was 25 years old. Kevin was born October 27, 1978 in Syosett, New York to Phyllis and Daniel Shorter, Jr. of Savannah and was the youngest of their three sons. For the first 11 years of life, Kevin resided in Deer Park, New York until he moved to Savannah, which he has called home for the past 14 years. Kevin's academic career began on Long Island, New York at St. Cyril and St. Methodius Catholic School. While in Savannah, Kevin attended Bartlett Middle School, Castle Heights Academy, and graduated from Jenkins High School. He was a star basketball player at Castle Heights Academy and outstanding football player at Jenkins High School. Kevin furthered his education by attending San Francisco Junior College, where he received his degree and won the state championship in football. Still striving to better himself and following his dream to play fo otball, he accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Hawaii. After being in Hawaii for some time, he left the University of Hawaii and pressed towards a degree at Fort Valley State University in order to be closer to home and his family. Kevin was an active member of Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Frederick A. Fearbry. He came from a strong Christian background and was very family-centered. His mother, grandmother (who preceded him in death), and aunt are all ordained ministers and his father is an ordained deacon at Thankful. Furthermore, his grandfather, Elder Daniel Shorter, Sr., (who preceded him in death) was the pastor of several churches. Kevin knew Christ at an early age and had a heart to help encourage, and win lives to Christ in his own unique way. He led by example and showed love to everyone he met. Kevin will always be remembered by his smile and the laughter that he was quick to share. Left to cherish his memory are: his mother, Phyllis Shorter and father, Daniel Shorter, Jr., of Savannah, GA; brother, Kenneth (LaWanda) of Stone Mountain, GA; brother, Daniel III (Rhonda) of Pasadena, CA; sister, Dainty (Dave) Williams of Pittson, PA; sister, Madeline (Earl) Hall of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Helena (James) Alston of Pittsburgh, PA; sister, Wilma Cobb of Las Vegas, NV; adopted second mother, Mary Young of Savannah, GA; two god-sisters, India Young and Sherron "Buttercup" Vann of Savannah, GA, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, cousins, and friends. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, December 26 at Thankful Baptist Church from 7:00-9:00 p.m. . Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Temple of Glory followed by the Interment at Oak Grove Cemetery.
