Warren Miles died Wednesday, July 15 surrounded by family.
Warren was born to Esther and J.B. Miles on September 3, 1933 in Crowley, Louisiana.
He and his brother John were raised by their mother and extended family in Crowley, Baton Rouge, Beaumont, and Los Angeles, finding their way in 1945 to Hot Springs where they became members of First United Methodist Church.
Warren, captain and coach for the Hot Springs Boys Club boxing team, turned down an appointment at West Point and a commission as an officer, so that he could fight with the marines in Korea where he was gravely wounded. A 100% disabled veteran, he was proud to have served his country.
After graduating from Hendrix College, Warren studied philosophy at Columbia University in New York and was then awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.
On completion of his masters degree at Oxford University (Jesus College), Warren did doctoral work at the University of Nuremburg and then began a long and uncommon career as a writer and adventurer, traveling extensively throughout the world, often with his family. Warren was never happier than when traveling in his VW camper.
His scholarly knowledge of philosophy and history, both modern and ancient, which he liberally shared with everyone, was truly amazing. Warren and his wife Joy Ann Miles lived with their five children, Heather, Martin and Michael Miles and Michael and Jeffery Pratt in Muskogee, Oklahoma and southern Spain.
Warren and Joy were married in 1973 in Gibraltar with their five children in attendance.
For several decades, Warren and Joy lived in central Germany; they traveled throughout Europe, often with their grandson Danien. Warren was proud to have become a Jaeger (hunter) in Germany. They retired to Hot Springs in 2008 to be close to their family.
Warren is survived by his wife Joy, their five children Heather Miles of Little Rock, Martin Miles of Hot Springs, Michael Miles of New York City, Michael Pratt of Winnweiler Germany and Jeffrey Pratt of Evergreen, Colorado; a grandson Danien Pratt of Winnweiler, Germany; his brother John of Hot Springs, his sister Peggy Lann (James) of Marshall, his sisters-in-law Betty Ibsen (Gerald) and Charla Moggs of Oklahoma; his nieces and nephew Deborah, John, and Rebekah Miles as well as other extended family and friends.
