George Ord Jr (1781-1866) was a naturalist, ornithologist, and writer. "He was one of those odd gentlemen of a bygone era—a wealthy businessman who retired young and dedicated the balance of his long life to scholarship. Self-taught and without a trace of formal education, Ord was a member of Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences, where he rose to many leadership positions, including president. He was also an elected member of the American Philosophical Society, the oldest and most prestigious of the nation's scholarly organizations, where he also served at high levels. Ord became one of the leading natural scientists, ornithologists, and lexicographers of his time." [The Southwark Historical Society. George Ord Jr (1781-1866) was the son of George Ord Sr (1741-1806) and Rebecca Lindenmyer (1742-1823), born in Philadelphia on March 4, 1781 in "The Ord House" at 784 South Front Street in the Southwark district of Philadelphia. (The house was acquired by George Ord Sr. from William Fleming. Photos of the home are easily found on the internet.)

George Ord Jr. married Margaret Biays (1783-1808) in Baltimore, Maryland on March 6, 1804. Margaret died a little over four years later, on April 14, 1808. During their brief marriage, the couple had two sons. The first born was: Joseph Benjamin Biays Ord (1805-1865), who died unmarried; followed by George Ord III (1806-1807) who died at the age of 11 months. Margaret and both of her sons are buried in the Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery. George himself died in Philadelphia on January 24, 1866 and was buried in the Lindemeyer family plot at Gloria Dei (Old Swedes) Church Burial Ground.
