Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 4th Vermont Volunteer Infantry, leading his unit at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He was the brother of Union Brigadier General Edwin H. Stoughton.
