US Congressman. A native of Macon, Mississippi, he was educated at local common schools in Jackson, Mississippi, and then attended college at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate State Army on March 5, 1862, with the rank of Private in Company 1, Thirty-Ninth Regiment of the Mississippi Volunteer Infantry. He saw action in several well-known battles, including the bombardment of Vicksburg, Mississippi, in June of 1862, the siege of Port Hudson, the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, and various engagements of the Atlanta Campaign in Atlanta, Georgia. During the war, he was promoted through several different grades of a noncommissioned officer up until July of 1864. He was transferred to Bradford's Calvary Corps of Scouts and Guards (or Bradford's Battalion) and was given the rank of Second Lieutenant and served in that capacity until the end of the Civil War. Following the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1868, and commenced to practicing in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He then decided to enter politics and he ran for the office of Mayor for the city of Kosciusko, Mississippi, winning the election. He only served one term as the Mayor in 1875. He then served as a Member of the Mississippi State House of Representatives in 1879 and again in 1880. A Democrat, he then served Mississippi's 5th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1887 to 1891. He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1890. He lastly served as the United States District Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi in 1896 and 1897. After his time in politics, he returned to practicing law in Kosciusko, Mississippi, until his death. He passed away at the age of 79.
