Lieutenant William Gaines Blasdel was the son of Elijah Sparks Blasdel, Jr and Louisa Gaines and born about 1876 in Arkansas. His maternal grandparents were William Haney Gaines and Mariah Belding. His paternal grandparents were Elijah Sparks Blasdel, Sr. and Margaret Cox.

William G. Blasdel married Frances E Fitzpatrick on 11 Feb 1901 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA. They had one daughter, Louise Frances Marie Blasdel, born 29 June 1904 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana.

2nd Lieut. William Gaines Blasdel was on board the US revenue cutter Rush when he disappeared from the ship. The Rush was docked in Richardson Bay in Sausalito, Marin County, California. He was believed to have fallen overboard or was pushed and his body was never recovered. HIs wife and daughter were set to arrive for a visit when his disappearance occurred. This would have been the first time he would see his 1 year old daughter.
