Marietta, Georgia - DeVon (De) Day, age 93, of Marietta, GA, died May 2, 2021, in Parker Adventist Hospital, Parker, CO, and his daughters and daughter-in-law were with him for the last hours of his life. He was married to Sherri Jeane Peck Day, who died in 2020, for 73 years, and is survived by his daughters, Kami Day (Michele Eodice) and Heidi (Tom) Owen, his son DeVon Tristan (Shonna) Day; his brother Doug (Lillette) Day; 13 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers LaMar Day and Gary Day, and his sisters Bette Morgan and Marlene Woodward.
De was born October 4, 1927, to Meda (Warrick) Day and LeRoi Day in Layton, Utah, and he graduated from Davis High School and the University of Utah. He and Sherri were married on November 14, 1947, in Logan, Utah. They were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and De held many positions in the church. Starting in 1992, De and Sherri served 5 missions in Slovenia, Poland, England, California, and Salt Lake City. They lived in Merced, CA, for 40 years before moving to Marietta in 2014 to be closer to family.
In his 23 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force, De and his family lived in England and in a number of states in the U.S. He was very proud of his service and his veteran status. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1945 when he was not yet 18, trained as an Aviation Mechanic, and worked on the JRM Flying Boat. He served on a South Pacific island and was discharged in 1946. He then entered the U.S. Air Force in 1951 out of the ROTC program at the University of Utah and earned his wings as a radar navigator in 1953, after which he trained in the B-26 bomber in preparation for Korea but instead joined the RB-45 jet bomber squadron, which was shipped to England. He returned to the U.S. in 1957 and upgraded to the B-47, then B-52, both with the Strategic Air Command. He flew three 6-month tours in Vietnam in the 60s and retired in 1972. De logged over 8,000 hours flying time and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and the Air Medal with 5 oak leaf clusters, among other awards.
De enjoyed gardening, walking, working crossword puzzles (with a pen), and traveling with Sherri. And he loved playing golf, spiffy in his old-style knickers and argyle socks. Even when he could no longer play, he took pleasure in following the tournaments. In retirement, De became an enthusiastic dirt-bike rider with his son Tristan, and he and Sherri sky dived when they were 80 years old. He was an avid reader, especially history, and faithfully watched Jeopardy, often arriving at the answers before the contestants did. In his later years, he found great joy in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he never failed to call them on their birthdays. De enjoyed people and made friends easily, and for most, the strongest memory of him will be of his kindness, his care for them and willingness to help in any way he could. He was a man who did what he said he was going to do, and that was true even on his last day of life. The world is richer because of him and we will miss him.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2021, from 6PM-8PM at Southern Cremations and Funerals at Cheatham Hill. Funeral services will be held, Friday, May 21, 2021 at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton
