Diane M. Harper, age 81, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Forest Park Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on October 22, 1938 in Harrisburg. She was the daughter of the late Berneice (Westhafer) Gerhardt and Harry Paul Rineard.
Diane was a graduate of Carlisle High School. Throughout her career she worked as a telephone operator, a data entry operator throughout her career and a cooperate communications specialist before retiring in 1999. She was very active in her church and community. Among the highlights, she was actively involved with the Mothers of DeMolay, at one point serving as President; the Mechanicsburg Halloween Parade Association and was an integral member of the Little Theater of Mechanicsburg where she enjoyed designing sets, creating choreography, and on-stage acting. Her involvement with the theater brought her immeasurable joy and happiness. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and immensely enjoyed their get togethers. In addition, she was very involved with the state democratic party, being named Cumberland County Democratic Committee Person of the year for 2005. Diane was a long-standing member of St Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a lay minister, member of the choir, home visitation and communion layman, and outreach committee, she was a Stephan Ministry training leader and active Stephan Minister. She was recognized in Marquis Who's Who in America on multiple occasions, most recently in 2019. Even as a ten-year resident of Forest Park, she continued pursuing her lifelong love of serving others. As one of the charter representatives, she helped establish the Pennsylvania Empowered Expert Residents (PEER) program at Forest Park. She was also a member of, and spokesperson for, the Forest Park resident council, and was on the activity planning committee.
She was a devoted mother to her four children, daughter, Dawn M. Cheugh Stazel (David) of Pike Road, AL, son, Steven L. Harper, of Carlisle, PA, son, William M. Harper (Kathie) of King George, VA and son, William L. Harper (Stephanie) of Erie, PA. She is survived by one sister, Cheryl Calaman, of Carlisle, PA, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a nephew and numerous friends.
A viewing will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. In the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle with Rev. Titus D. Clarke officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Mt Zion Cemetery, Churchtown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Louther St., Carlisle, PA 17013. www.Since1853.com.
