Miles moved to Montana in 1880 and served as an Army paymaster at Fort Keogh, now known as Miles City. He started a hardware business and in 1882 opened another business in Billings and then joined Colonel A.L. Babcock and created Babcock & Miles in Bozeman. He went on to open other businesses in across the state. Miles was also involved in sheep ranching and through the Miles Land & Investment Company, he built the Livingston Theatre, the Miles Building and the Park Hotel. Starting in 1887 Miles served two terms as mayor of Livingston and later served as Montana's state senator representing Park County. He married Idella Draper in 1985 and together they had four children. In 1909 Miles served as the Lieutenant-Governor for the state of Montana. In the late 1920s, their son Dan took over control of Miles' companies and Miles and his wife retired and moved to Los Angeles.
