Janice Lynn Gray, 63, of Venice, Fla., and Juneau, Alaska, formerly of Washington, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021, in Tampa, Fla., while awaiting a lung transplant, after a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Jan was beloved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed by family and friends, all of whom surrounded her with love and support during her illness.

She was born September 22, 1957, in Washington, a beloved daughter of the late Lloyd R. Gray and the late Olga Podolec Gray.

Janice was a 1975 graduate of Trinity High School in Washington, and received her R.N. diploma from Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in 1978. She subsequently completed her BSN from the University of Phoenix while pursuing her nursing career in Juneau.

Jan had a long career as an intensive care nurse in both Pittsburgh and in Juneau, the place she called home for 37 years. Her career in Juneau ultimately led to her position as nurse manager of all critical care services, a position she much enjoyed, and in which she was much loved by her staff. She also spent part of her time as a critical care nurse for Life Flight in Juneau.

She ended her nursing career as a nurse managing consultant for the State of Alaska, a position in which she traveled and lectured all over the country.

Janice was a worldwide traveler, going to places too numerous to name. She was the medical consultant on one occasion for a University of Minnesota research team, which spent three months on the Juneau Ice Field.

Janice is survived by three siblings, Virginia Sand of Granville, Ohio, Peter Gray (Carol McLaughlin-Gray) of Venice, Fla., and Ann Gray (Bruce Farmer) of Smyrna, Del.

She is also survived by a beloved niece, Erica Gray Sarknas (Paul) of Canonsburg; and nephews Jordan Gray (Christine) of Bethel Park and Ryan Sand of Portland, Maine; as well as several beloved cousins on both the Gray and Podolec sides of her family.

And she also leaves three special friends, who were her Juneau family: Lisa Wallace and her son, Ilya; Jan's beloved godson, Jim Protz, her travel companion of many years; and Nina Rajala, formerly of Juneau. These friends were truly an integral part of Jan's life in Juneau. She loved them all dearly.

There will be no formal services. A memorial tribute will be a private gathering of family and close friends.

Those who wish to honor Jan's memory may do so by making a donation to Juneau Animal Rescue, 7705 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801, or your local humane society.
