Jose was born July 25, 1931 in Pabelo, Jalisco, Mexico to Ignacio Pelayo and Cecilia Uribe.
He grew up in Mexico and attended schools there. On April 6, 1956 Jose married Maria Brambila in Jalisco, Mexico. Together, they had twelve children. Jose and Maria moved their family to Blackfoot nearly 30 years ago. They were married for 60 years before Maria preceded him in death in 2016.
Jose worked at Nonpareil for many years and was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
He loved playing cards, shooting pool, singing and playing his guitar and violin. He enjoyed listening to music and taking care of his garden and was always joking around with family and friends.
Jose is survived by his children, Edelia (Ramon) Guerra, Estela (Silverio) Lora, Raquel (Eduardo) Lora, Efrain (Nemoria) Pelayo, Matilde Pelayo, Arcelia (Felipe) Garcia, Abraham (Araceli) Pelayo, Gabriel (Lilia) Pelayo, and Guillermo (Elia) Pelayo. He is also survived by 33 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria; his parents, Ignacio and Cecilia Pelayo; his son Antonio Pelayo; daughter, Gema Pelayo and Rosa Maria Pelayo.
A rosary and viewing will take place at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 584 W Sexton Street in Blackfoot on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Grove City Cemetery.
