Roy A. Nelson, 103, a longtime resident of the Sherwood community, died Sunday morning, July 5, 2020 at the Springs Retirement Community in Sherwood.

Private family graveside services will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Forest View Cemetery, 1161 W. Pacific Ave. in Forest Grove, with the Reverend Richard E. Osburn, retired minister, officiating. Burial rites and interment will follow at the cemetery.

Roy Andrew Nelson was born March 14, 1917 in Marshall, Minnesota, the son of Andrew Nelson and Ida (Clay) Nelson. He was raised and received his education in Marshall, Minnesota at the age of seventeen years old, he moved with his family to Oregon, settling in the Gaston community.

He was united in marriage to Iola Wisch on June 14, 1941 in Vancouver, Washington. Following their marriage, they resided in the communities of Lake Grove, Hillsboro, Toledo, Portland and Lake Oswego. They lived in Lake Oswego for fifty-three years, until 1998, when they moved to the Sherwood community, where he had resided since.

Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Iola, on September 26, 2004 in Sherwood, after celebrating over sixty-three years of marriage together and his son Steve Nelson in June 2017.

He had worked in maintenance for the Lake Oswego School District #7J for twenty-two years, until 1980 when he retired.

Among his special interests, he enjoyed photography, gardening and visiting the Oregon coast.

Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Janice Nelson, of Stevensville, Montana; his two grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Paul Hutchison, of Stevensville, Montana and Katy and Mark Tschida, of Stevensville, Montana; and his four great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
