US Congressman. Elected as a Whig to represent New York's 27th District in the Thirtieth Congress, he served from March 1847 until his death in office. Holley was born in Salisbury, Connecticut into a notable family. He graduated from Yale College in 1822, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1825. The following year he settled as a lawyer in Lyons, New York. Holley was a member of the New York State Assembly (1838 to 1841), Wayne County District Attorney (1842 to 1845), and an unsuccessful candidate for the Twenty-Ninth Congress (1844) before winning his seat in the US House of Representatives. He served exactly half of his term before he died on a trip to Jacksonville, Florida. His remains were brought back to Lyons for interment. There is also a cenotaph for him at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
