Donald was the drummer for Luther Barnes and The Sunset Jubilaires and the Red Budd Choir of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Donald was the son of Haywood Barnes and Doretha Braswell Barnes. He was educated in the Nash County School System and was a Class of 1980 graduate of Northern Nash High School in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was employed with the Nash County Board of Education as a Custodian at Edwards Middle School in Rocky Mount and also as a Bus Driver. He received the Nash County Bus Driver of the Year award in 2012.

Taught by his mother, Donald began playing the drums at a young age and began playing professionally at 15 for his father's Gospel Quartet, Luther Barnes & The Sunset Jubilaires. He continued as the group's drummer until his death. He served as the Road Manager for his cousin, Rev Luther Barnes and as the Stage Manager for the Luther Barnes Fall Gospel Classic in Rocky Mount.

Donald served as the drummer for Rock of Ages United Holy Church in Rocky Mount, North Carolina; Walter's Chapel Holiness Church in Hollister, North Carolina and Red Budd Holiness Church in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He was among the founding members of Restoration Worship Center in Rocky Mount in 2014 where he served as Church Drummer and was Ordained by Pastor Luther Barnes as a Deacon in 2017.

He was married to Sharon "Denise" Barnes, they had 3 children. He was preceded in death by 1 sister, Karen "Trise" Barnes.

Services were held Friday, May 7, 2021 at 12PM in the Sanctuary of Celebration of Life Restoration Worship Center in Rocky Mount, North Carolina with Pastor Melvin Barnes officiating and Pastor Luther Barnes Eulogist.
