Tommy Joe "T.J." Short, 75, of Galesburg, died peacefully at 1:50 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2021, at home with his family by his side.

Tommy was born May 4, 1945, at home in Ottumwa, IA, the son of George R. and Hattie E. (Eaves) Short. He married Rita Carole Stanton on August 2, 1988, in Mt. Pleasant, IA. Tommy is survived by his wife, Rita of Galesburg; three daughters, Regina Batterson of Columbia, MO, Tamy (Gary) Doud of Ottumwa, IA, and Jennifer Sanders of Ashland, MO; and three sons, Jeremy Johnson and Joshua (Heidi) Johnson both of What Cheer, IA, and Douglas McAdam of Galesburg. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Brittni (Steven) Wilson, Daltin Doud, Jacob McAdam, Lexis Short, Makinsey Wildrick, Taylor Hale, and Prezli Sanders; two great-granddaughters, Amelia and Averi Wilson; and one brother, Lad (Karen) Short of Ottumwa, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Donald Short, Jack Short, Robert Short; and 6 sisters: Beatrice Schultz, Mary Davis, Dorothy Jones, Marcene "Patty" Short, Lois Brewer, and Dixie Miller.

Tommy graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1965. He then went to work at John Morrell Meat Packing in Ottumwa, later working at International Harvester, Amana, and went to work at Burlington Northern Railroad on April 9, 1973, as a conductor/brakeman, retiring on March 28, 2000.

Tommy was a family man. He was always there and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He loved playing cards and visiting with his great-nephew Terry (Judy) Jones, who was more like a brother. He truly enjoyed watching his granddaughter Brittni Wilson play softball and his 2 grandsons Jacob McAdam and Daltin Doud play sports. He enjoyed watching the Little League World Series every year. He attended for many years the Sprint Car Knoxville Nationals with family and friends (Stepson Doug McAdam, and friends Ric Fielder and Richard Swanson). He never missed watching the NCAA Basketball tournament each year. He loved watching basketball, especially college and the Galesburg Silver Streaks. Tommy could tell a story like no one else and didn't know a stranger.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021, at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg, IL. Cremation will be accorded following visitation. No funeral services are planned. Due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, social distancing, face masks, and limited occupancy will be enforced. Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice.
