Galena, KS: Michael E. Durbin, age 71 of Galena, passed away at 4:27 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at Mercy Hospital of Joplin, MO.
Mike was born on January 10, 1950, to the union of Earl Andrew Durbin and Nelle (Terry) Durbin. He graduated from Neosho High School before attending college to become a tradesman. He had lived in various towns throughout the four-state area before settling in Galena in 1986. For over 40 years, Mike operated Durbin Construction. He was a master at framing houses, and completed several framing jobs on notable homes throughout the four-states. He frequented Frank's Lounge in Joplin, was a member of the Elk's Lodge, and enjoyed spending his free time fishing. He was very active in starting a Softball League in Galena where he made many lifetime friends. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Later in life, he became affiliated with the Pentecostal Life Center, south of Joplin.
Mike was united in marriage with Terri (Burkybile) Durbin in Las Vegas, NV, on November 8, 1996. She preceded him in death on June 15, 2020.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Nelle; one son, Eric Durbin; and two brothers, Randy and Eddie Durbin.
Survivors include two sons, Chad Cole (wife, Sarah) of Joplin, MO, and Brad Cole (wife, Amanda) of Baxter Springs, KS; two daughters, Crista Sifferman (husband, Rusty) of rural Newton County, MO, and Jennifer Hoover (partner, Brittany) of Miami, OK; four siblings, David Durbin of Miami, Joyce Jones (husband, Gary) of Seneca, MO, Terry Durbin of Seneca, and Jim Durbin (wife, Rose) of Seneca; one sister-in-law, Debbie Durbin of Loma Linda, MO; eight grandchildren, Garret Castor, Montanna Lansaw, Vada Cole, Ethan Durbin, Erica Hoover, Jaxson Cole, Zachary Sifferman, and Kelsey Sifferman.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the Pentecostal Life Center, 5505 Gateway Drive, Joplin, MO. Pastor Jarrod Jones will officiate. Pallbearers will be Chad Cole, Brad Cole, Garret Castor, Adam Durbin, Ethan Durbin, and Montanna Lansaw, with honorary pallbearers being Bob Deardorff, Dr. Mike McDonald, and Bill Cowan. Burial will follow at the Ottawa Indian Cemetery.
Visitation will take place on Friday, April 30, 2021, from 6-7:00 p.m. at Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home to help defray the funeral expense.
