Florence Elizabeth Metcalf (nee Richards) was born March 2, 1950 to the union of Louis Justilien and Emily Grace Richards (Taylor) in Waukegan, Illinois. She departed this earthly life on April 29, 2021 at 5:23 a.m. at the JourneyCare Hospice Facility in Glenview, Illinois.

Florence became a member of Greater St. James Temple Institutional Church of God in Christ in 2003. Her mother, Emily Barnes, led her to Christ. As she accepted Christ, she was baptized by the Holy Ghost. She worshipped and served God faithfully under the cover of superintendent Elder Torrance A. Markham, Sr. While attending St. James she was the overseer of the PADs program, served as a secretary of Sunday school, worked with young children as a teacher in Vacation Bible School, received her license as a Notary Public and served in other capacities over the years. Outside her church duties, she served as secretary for Alderman Torrance A. Markham, Fifth Ward, City of North Chicago.

Florence was an avid Bible Scholar, attended Bible study and Sunday school regularly and she loved reading and studying the Bible. She also liked to make jewelry and sew. She enjoyed traveling to many places within the United States as well as abroad to London and Paris.

Florence attended Central Elementary School, Novak Jr. High School and North Chicago Community High School, where she graduated in 1968. During high school, she volunteered as a Candy Striper at St. Therese Medical Hospital and later became an employee. After high school, Florence held various management positions as a Supervisor-Clinical Coordinator at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago until her retirement.

Florence was a beloved sister, aunt, and great-aunt, she nurtured and help raised her nieces and nephews. They all loved her dearly.

Florence married Freddie Carrasquillo and with that union, son Alejandro Carrasquillo was born prematurely at 5 months in which he preceded her in death. Later the marriage was dissolved. As a member of Greater St. James Temple Institutional COGIC, she met and married Odell Metcalf on December 2, 2013. To that marriage, she inherited a stepson Casey Metcalf. As a married couple, they enjoyed many wonderful years together traveling and serving God.

She leaves to cherish her memory of her beloved husband, Odell Metcalf. Her siblings Catherine McIntosh of Chicago, Illinois; Louis P. Richards (Lorenda) of Lafayette, California; Elaine E. Hill of Detroit, Michigan; Marilyn A. Wikner (Steven) of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Offie A. Barnes, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; Pamela C. Ritter of Du Quoin, Illinois; Cheryl R. Turner of North Chicago, Illinois; and Darlene R. Smith (Donald) of North Chicago, Illinois. And her aunt, Pastor Florence Wallace. She also leaves to cherish her memory her stepson Casey Metcalf, her sisters-in-law Barbara Tucker, Dorothy Duty, and Polly Gray, her brother-in-law James Metcalf, Godsons Rafael Carrasquillo and Amir Gulley, and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother Emily (Richards) Barnes, father Louis Richards, stepfather, Office Barnes, infant siblings Barbara Ann and Henry Willie, and brother Nathaniel Richards. In addition, her cousin, Florence Sloan. Also preceded in death brother-in-law Carlton Turner, Elder Ralph Gray, Johnny Tucker, and Robert Ritter.

A Celebration of Her Life Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 7, 2021 at the Greater St. James COGIC, 21231 Wright Avenue, North Chicago, IL. Pastor Elder Torrance A. Markham, Officiating. Interment will be at Northshore Garden of Memories. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M.
