US Congressman. Gabriel Richard was a prominent religious figure in Detroit. He is often called the second founder of the city. He was co-founder of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1817. He served as a territorial delegate to Congress, printed the first newspaper in Michigan, "The Observer". He died of cholera, one of the last victims of an epidemic that ravaged Detroit, ministering to the sick in 1837.
