Verna was raised in the neighborhood of Concord Corners, and graduated in 1944 from Spartansburg High School. On June 22, 1944, she married William E. Scouten Sr., in Sumter, South Carolina. Following World War II, they lived in Spartansburg, Pa., and then bought and operated their farm near Concord Corners, Sparta Township for many years. During this time Verna drove her station wagon to transport special needs children to school in Townville, Pa. each day.
After William's death in 1973, Verna saved one acre from their farm and built her home with the most beautiful view of the valley and Clear Lake. She worked retail at Richard's Department Store, the Fair Store and Taylor's Jewelry Store, all in Corry, retiring in 1986.
On July 11, 1987, she married Harold C. Tubbs Sr. They spent many years traveling the United States and enjoying their retirement until his death in 2003.
Verna was a member of the Spartansburg United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the United Methodist Women, lay leader, secretary of the Trustees and a Sunday School teacher. She was the treasurer and a committee chairperson of the Sparta Fair for over 30 years. Verna was also a member of the Spartansburg Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary, a 62 year member of Sparta Grange #110, member of Pomona Grange of Crawford County, and Pennsylvania State and National Grange, where she was a 7th degree member. She was treasurer of Woodlawn Cemetery and a board member of Love, Inc. Her greatest joy was her family and hosting family gatherings including Sunday dinner.
Verna is survived by her son, Barry (Sharon) Scouten Sr.; a daughter, Wendy (Kenneth) Swank, all of Corry, Pa.; and a daughter-in-law, Lois Scouten of Spartansburg, Pa.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Alan (Nancy) Scouten, Mark (Michelle) Scouten, Eric Scouten, Barry (Michelle) Scouten Jr., Becky (Chad) Gray, Carla (David) Fox and Megan (Matthew) Kennedy; great-grandchildren, Kyle (Megan) Scouten, Jessica (Ian) Wagemaker, Bradley Scouten, Allison Scouten, Elliot Scouten, Amber (Kevin) Slye, Jaxon Gray, Nick Vanhooser, Riley Vanhooser, Delaney Scouten, and Zachary, Jonah and Ethan Kennedy; her great-great grandchildren, Kaius, Viola, Maia and Madison Scouten; and three step-sons, Marvin (Linda) Tubbs, Rev. James (Jolene) Tubbs, Harold (Kathy) Tubbs and their families.
In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husbands; two sons, William E. Scouten Jr., and Jerry Lee Scouten; and six sisters, Mildred (Philip) Northrop, Iva (Guy) Fralick, Florence (Harlon) Burlingame, Edith (Keith) Nichols and twins, Tretha and Letha Goodwill.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm. Due to CDC regulations, masks and social distancing will be required. The funeral service will be held privately on Monday and may be viewed on the Bracken Funeral Home Facebook page at 11am.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta Towsnhip.
