Martha Lee Jackson Rose of Salem, Virginia passed peacefully to eternal rest on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 10, 1949 to the late Eliza Dickerson Barbour.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmitt and Mozell Washington; her loving husband of 37 years, Deacon James T. Rose Sr.; children, James T. Rose Jr. and daughter, Melissa Rose; sisters, Florence Miller and Yvonne Jackson; brothers, John Thomas Jackson, MacArthur Jett, and Norman Woods and brother-in-law, Danny Rose.

Martha gave her life to the Lord at an early age at Oak Grove Baptist Church and at age 28 she was ordained as a Deaconess. In 1977 when the family relocated to Salem, Virginia she became a member of First Baptist Church of Salem where she served as Church Secretary, Youth Group Leader, Deaconess and sang with the Gospel Chorus. At the time of her passing Martha was a member of Union Baptist Church, Glasgow where she continued her work as a Deaconess, served on the Senior Choir and worked on the Finance Team.

Before the move to Salem, Martha was employed by General Electric and in 1984 she began her teaching career with Roanoke County school system at Mason's Cove Elementary School until her retirement in 2009.

She was a proud member of Success No. 85 Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron and she was the inaugural Grand Lecturer of the Western District within the Grand Chapter OES of Virginia. Martha was also Past State Grand Loyal Lady Ruler for The State of Virginia Order of The Golden Circle P.H.A.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Davian Darnell Rose (Mary Beth); granddaughter, Sherelle Rose (Daniel), and grandson, Adonis Rose. Sisters, Doretha Brooks, Mozell Henderson, Hilda Henderson; brothers, Roger Jackson, Curtis Dickerson, Michael Dillard, Tommy Fuller, Lynwood Johnson, and Mark Blair. A special friend, Doug Turner. Sisters-in-law, Mary Spears (Charlie), Eva Haston (Robert), Patricia Hurdle, and Delores Rose and brothers-in-law, David Rose (Brenda) and Roscoe Rose (Susan).

Martha is also survived by an extended family consisting of Robert Jackson, John R. Jackson (Allene), William Jackson (Otelia), Annie Myers, Elizabeth Jackson, Danny Jackson, Barry Jackson, Loretta Barbour, Liza Jane Barbour, Matt Barbour, James Woods, Barbara Durrette, Emily Hawkins (Lester), Denise Jones (Robert), Dennis Woods, Jacqueline Awkard (Herman), Odell Vest, Roberta Gray (James), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends at the residence and on Friday, April 30, 2021 from 1 until 5 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021 in accordance with COVID-19 protocol at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory.
