LTC Marvin W. Schwem
August 24, 1934 ~ April 24, 2021 (age 86)

LTC Marvin W. Schwem passed away April 24th after a long illness.

He was born on August 24, 1934 the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Schwem and lived in the Detroit area until he joined the army in 1959, serving 20 years with 3 tours in Vietnam.

Marvin served in the army as a helicopter pilot and pilot instructor. It was his honor to fly two Presidents and numerous heads of state throughout his career.

After his retirement from the military he was the commander of the corps of students at the Soldiers and Sailors Orphan Home in Ohio, where orphans of veterans resided. He also spent 17 years as Director of Education at the Stationary Engineering Education Center. During this time he married his wife and best friend Marianne.

After his second retirement in 1993, he, his wife Marianne, and his son Andrew moved to his family's ranch in Boyne Falls to raise horses, cattle, sheep and chickens. In total, Marv had six children; Scott (Lisa), Kristen (John), Kevin (Brooke), Andrew, Todd and David, nine grandchildren, as well has several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph and Elizabeth, his stepmother Rosalia, and his brother Jack. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth (Libby) Gray.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 22nd, at 11:00 AM with a luncheon to follow at Christ Lutheran Church in Boyne City, MI.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Charlevoix Humane Society.
