Samuel Murphy Miller, 74, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 22, 2021.

Sam was born in Lynchburg, Va. and attended E.C. Glass High School. After high school, he served in the United States Army. Upon return from service in Vietnam, Sam married his high school sweetheart, Ann Early Thompson, and he went on to graduate from Gardner Webb College.

Prior to retirement, Sam was the Director of Human Resources and Safety at Roanoke Electric Steel, where he worked for 30 years. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time at his cabin on Bent Mountain, attending Tractor Safety Meetings, eating breakfast at Famous Anthony's, and going to the Catawba Farmers Market. Sam was also an avid basketball fan and loved the outdoors.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, George Murphy Miller and Christine Carr Miller Hicks. Sam is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Thompson Miller; three children, Bradford Early Miller (Allison) of Arlington, Sarah Alice Miller, and Alan Thompson Miller (Rebecca) of Roanoke; grandsons, Benjamin Claude Miller of Arlington and Arthur Thompson Miller of Roanoke; and brother, Patrick Alan Miller of Portsmouth. He is also survived by his faithful companion, Lester.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Oakey's South Chapel. Due to COVID-19, a memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
