STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — William E. Gilliam, 90, former Staten Islander and retired engineer, died April 16 in Danville, Calif. Born in Carrollton, Va., he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine from 1943 to 1945 on convoy duty in the North Atlantic. He retired from the service in 1947 as a chief engineer. He moved to Dongan Hills in 1947 and to New Dorp in 1956. He moved to Madrid in 1962; Westfield, N.J., in 1965; Paris in 1967 and Houston in 1973. He settled in California in 2009. He graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, and worked as an engineer for CDI Lummus in Newark. Throughout his career he worked in various parts of Europe before retiring in 1990. He enjoyed playing golf, watching baseball and traveling. His wife of 62 years, Josephine Cecala Curatolo, died in 2009. His grandson, Jeffrey Edwin Gilliam, died in 1984. Surviving are two sons, William and Steven; five grandsons, and one great-granddaughter. The funeral will be Friday from the Holy Angels Funeral and Cremation Center, Lafayette, Calif., with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc R.C. Church, San Roman, Calif. Burial will follow in Klein Memorial Park, Houston.
