Russell B. Nelson, age 93, of Dodgeville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Russell was born on June 25, 1927 in Lancaster to Benjamin and Edna Nelson. He was a 1945 graduate of the Platteville High School. Russ was Captain of the Conference Champion Football Team and went on to play college football at UW Platteville. As a senior in High School, Russ enlisted in the Navy and served during and after World War II. Russell married the love of his life, Lois Belt of Tomah on September 20, 1952. Together they raised five children, Dean, Neal, Bruce, Nancy and David. Russell worked for the University of Wisconsin Extension for over 31 years as a 4-H Youth Agent. He was recognized as one of the ten best Extension Agents in the United States in 1958. He was also recognized at the Iowa County Fair for being involved with the new Fair Building and judging exhibits at the fair. Russell continued judging at County Fairs in Wisconsin until he was 85 years old. Russ was inducted into the Wisconsin 4-H Hall of Fame in 2014.

Russell was an active member of the Dodgeville United Methodist Church. He served as Superintendent of Sunday School and Chairman of the Building Committee that built the new church. Russell was an avid reader and served on the Iowa County Library Board for a number of years. Russell was a huge sports fan enjoying watching Football, Baseball, Basketball, Stock Car Racing and Bull Riding. He was one of the very rare individuals that actually pulled for the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. One of his biggest joys was attending children and grandchildren's sports activities and along with Lois were their biggest fans. Russell and Lois were animal lovers and adopted numerous stray cats in need of a good home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois on February 18, 2019; his parents, Benjamin and Edna Nelson and two brothers, Maynard and Paul.

Russell is survived by his five children, Dean (Linda) Nelson of LaCrosse; Neal (Kari) Nelson of Waukesha; Bruce (Kelly) Nelson of Kimberly; Nancy Boulet of Sierra Vista, AZ; and David Nelson of Madison; eight grandchildren, Heather, Heidi, Christopher, Ryan, Amber, Laura, Krista and Will; ten great grandchildren, Avery, Anders, Dean, Graham, Naevia, Dresden, Taleen, Talia, Adam and Bryant; a sister-in-law, Beverly Arity of Tomah; a niece, Madge (Leon) Neuheisel of Platteville as well as many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 3, 2021 at the Dodgeville United Methodist Church. Pastor Jim Droste will officiate with burial in East Side Cemetery.
