Obituary of James Dodd "Jim" Couch
James Dodd "Jim" Couch passed away unexpectedly on April 14, 2021. Born in Athens, Georgia, Nov. 30, 1947, he was preceded in death by his parents, Randal E. Couch, MD and Jean Couch.
He is survived by his Aunt Susan Fraser, Uncle Ira Dodd, numerous cousins and the love of his life, his wife, Janet Chambers, and her large family of brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, all who loved Jim, countless friends, and students.
Jim was a proud member of the Marine Corps serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded both the Silver and Bronze Star Medals as well as two Purple Heart Medals.
Jim had many talents and business interests during his lifetime. After graduating from University of Georgia, he had a business interest in "The Punch Line" in Atlanta, was owner of "Classic Screen Print" in Athens and was employed by US Foods, during which time he also served the church community as a member of Athens First United Methodist Church for over 10 years, providing meals for "Wednesday Night Supper."
Well-known in Martial Arts for his dedication and expertise, he held an 8th Dan in Tae Kwon Do and also Black Belt ranks in Hapkido and Judo. He was one of a few obtaining Grandmaster Level while being under the tutelage of Korean Grandmaster Seo. Jim volunteered his time to teach the UGA Karate Club, the longest continuously running Martial Arts club at UGA, meeting since 1960. He taught for over 50 years. His instruction and influence went beyond martial arts and self-defense techniques. He taught with humor and discipline, and students remember his colorful and humorous quips he used to motivate students. He inspired his students to work together, support each other and approach challenges with humor and compassion, leading to future successes in their lives.
Jim enjoyed traveling, RVing with family and friends, and scuba-diving. Having a culinary background, he enjoyed food, cooking, and sharing recipes and food with others.
An avid Harley-Davidson man, he enjoyed participating in benefit rides for children's organizations, and sharing bike rides with friends.
But even more importantly than all of these accomplishments, Jim was known for his generosity and his ability to have a kind word for everyone. He never met a stranger, establishing relationships with people from all walks of life and took the time to keep up with people, maintaining many close relationships lasting his whole life.
Visitation will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home on Friday, April 30 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
