Kilmarnock, Ayrshire born centre half Bob began his football career with Scottish junior club Dundee North End from where he joined First Division Portsmouth, making his Football League debut against Aston Villa in April 1931.
His first four seasons at Fratton Park were very much spent on the fringe, but from the start of the 1934-35 season he established himself in the first eleven, missing only 6 games in the next 3 seasons. But he lost his place in 1937 and in November 1938 he joined Chelsea after 141 appearances for Pompey.

His Chelsea career was cut short by the Second World War, by when he had made 32 appearances for The Pensioners, and after the War he played for non league Banbury Spencer in 1945.
