MARIAN NELSON MARSHALL, 96, Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grand-mother, of Chamberlain, Maine passed away after a short illness on November 11, 2014. Marian was born on August 31st, 1918, in Cleveland to Emil and Alma Nelson. She graduated from high school in Euclid, after which she attended The Ohio State University. On November 22, 1940, she married the love of her life, Hubert "Hugh" Marshall. Early in their marriage, and while Hugh was serving in the Navy, Marian worked for the Presbyterian Church and with the Girl Scouts. She was also a talented calligrapher whose hand-lettered signs grace many walls to this day. Marian and Hugh shared a love of the outdoors, and camped and canoed nearly all their lives. Some of their children's fondest memories are of the long canoe trips they took with family friends deep into the Quetico region of Canada. Marian's chocolate chip cookies made with a reflector oven in the campfire were always a hit after a long day of paddling. After several moves within Ohio and New Jersey, Marian and Hugh settled in Aurora, Ohio where they lived happily for 25 years. When Hugh retired, they winterized their summer home on Long Cove Point in Chamberlain, Maine, where they spent many more contented years together. It was frequently remarked by those who knew her that Marian was the epitome of a true lady. She was also known for her intelligence, her sense of humor, her love of all things Swedish, her bright red hair, her artistic ability, and most of all her devotion to her beloved husband and family. Marian is survived by her son, Kirk, wife Wendy and their four children; her son Keith, wife Rose and their son; her son James, wife Diane and their three children; and her daughter Victoria Smith and her husband Paul. She is also survived by 9 great grandchildren. From the day she began dating her husband to the day he predeceased her they were together for 75 years, 71 of them in marriage. She was also predeceased by her brother, Alvar Nelson. There will be no calling hours. A private burial will be held in Maine at a later date.
