Proposed by Canadian Prime Minister MacKenzie King in 1925, the monument was dedicated on Armistice Day 1927 to the United States citizens who enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and lost their lives during World War I. Following World War II and the Korean War, the monument also included the Americans who served in the Canadian Armed Forces as a show of goodwill and friendship that the United States and Canada share.
