Herman Barkemeyer, 80, of Lexington, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at Thornton Terrace Health Campus.

He was born Nov. 6, 1926, in Rector, Ark., the son of Herman Karl and Melissa Price Barkemeyer. He graduated from high school in Rector, Ark., and attended Harding College in Searcy, Ark. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was discharged from the Army during the Korean War. He moved to Madison in 1954 and began a 34-year career as with the Indiana Kentucky Electric Corp., retiring as a electrician specialist on April 1, 1987. He was an amateur radio operator and enjoyed tinkering with electronics. Later in life, he worked with greyhound dogs. He was a member of the Madison Veterans of Foreign War Post 1969; Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion; was a founding member of the Kent Volunteer Fire Company; and was a member of Monroe Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge.

He is survived by one sister, Pauline See of Lebanon, Tenn.; one brother, Donald Barkemeyer of Grant Pass, Ore.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and his caregivers including Kevin Mann and Cynthia Bell of Lexington, and Mary Martha Schafer of Hanover.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Melissa Price Barkemeyer Baker; one son, William "Bill" Barkemeyer, who died July 7, 1995; one brother, Edwin Barkemeyer; and his stepfather, Millard Baker.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion will hold a flag presentation after the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Andersonville National Cemetery in Americus, Ga.
