*************

Nicholas John Smith was born on the 19th of December 1931 in Adelaide, South Australia to Violet May Ryder (who was aged 34 years old) and William James Smith (aged 33 years old). He wasn't fond of his first name and was predominantly called by his middle name John. He had three older siblings - Marjorie Doreen Smith, Emily May Goodwin and Laurence "Laurie" Geoffrey Smith and one younger sister - Barbara Maureen Smith.

*************

At the age of 20 years old, he married Fay "Mootley" Winifred in Hindmarsh, South Australia on the 16th of February 1952. Fay's sister June was the maid of honour and their brother-in-law, Malcolm August Mader was the best man. Fay and John had three sons during their marriage.

*************

John and Fay lived in The Basin for much of their life building their own home near the Doongalla National Park. They loved this area, and regularly loved seeing the large trees, wildlife and birdlife. They regularly would feed the birdlife drawing many different species to the property. His favourite birds were the local parrots, kookaburras and the butcher birds. He would specifically buy mince for the butcher birds who would catch it mid air.

*************

John loved being outdoors and amongst nature. He regularly worked outside in his garden spending many hours. His garden was quite extensive and included many different varieties of plants which would bloom. The most notable and flourishing flowers were from his camellias and clematis plants.

*************

John and Fay would regularly take day trips exploring nature parks in Victoria. They also travelled multiple times across to Tasmania. Tasmania was one of their most favourite places that they had been, often describing the beautiful scenery and their experiences.

*************

There were two other distinct trips which John loved. One comprised of travelling to White Cliffs, New South Wales and the opal mines there in September 1973. He travelled with his eldest son and brother-in-law, Max. They had many adventures here together. The other was a trip with one of this sons to New Zealand in October 2012. This was his first time out of Australia and loved every moment often describing things as fantastic. He was most excited to see the Huka Falls.

*************

John and Fay both loved animals. Cats and dogs were a large part of their family through the years. John's particular beloved pet was a german shepherd named Jake. Jake came to the family as a puppy and lived a life of luxury and adventure, often going bushwalking with them. Later in years, they had a bichon named Pepe', who was incredibly pampered.

*************

A big part of John's life was reading novels, particularly fictional thrillers, adventure and mystery. His favourite authors comprised of Clive Cussler, Wilbur Smith and Matthew Riley.

*************

John died on the 6th of July 2020 at the Ferntree Gully Hospital in Victoria, Australia at the age of 88 years old.
