Acheson was the nephew of pioneer Denison physician Dr. Alex Acheson. He was the son of Alexander Mahor and Alice Hanna Acherson, who resided in Denison before moving to Dallas in 1926.
He joined the Dallas Times Herald in March 1926 as a general assignments reporter and became editorial writer in 1948. He retired from that position in 1961. He was a veteran of the Army Signal Corps in World War I and was one of the first men to fly the Curtis Jennie. During his Denison residency, he was employed by the Missouri-Pacific railroad.
Survivors include his son, Alex L. Acheson; three granddaughters, Alice Acheson Snow, with whom he made his home, Sandra Lanier Acheson and Peri Lynn Achison, all of Dallas.
