" Robert Neal Woodard, aka "bubba", passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021. He passed peacefully and painlessly into eternity after a lengthy struggle with a number of medical issues.
He was a1969 graduate of Memphis Technical High School. He loved sports. During his three years at Tech, he played football, basketball and baseball. I'm not sure, but, he might have participated in track and field at some point. He loved football, but it contributed to his problems. I don't remember if his numbers made him the best quarterback in the city, but, in my eyes, he was the best. Is that biasness speaking? Of course it is. I'm his brother, Tommy. Arguably, one cannot be more biased than that. He was a way better than average basketball player. Baseball, well, I was the catcher who could control him better than anyone else, at least in his 9th grade year. They moved in a new kid to catch in his second year, Ralph Allen I believe. He was very equal to the task. He played hard and took it seriously, but, he had fun.
As a worker, he gave it all he had until he simply had no more to give. He loved his family.
He spent the last 20 plus years with medical issues that forced him into disability, but, he handled it well. We used to discuss those things from time to time. He would usually end by saying, "but, I'll deal with it the best I can."
In late March, he fell and broke his hip. Surgery was risky, but it was the only option. All of his other medical issues made recovery difficult. But, difficult led to impossible, and then he passed. He wanted to be at home, and he was. He was surrounded by those who loved him and, those whom he loved the most.
He remembered many of his friends from high school, but he was not eager to hang out in large crowds. His large crowds were usually those in church where he enjoyed teaching bible classes and sometimes preaching. However, there were times he and I talked about those high school days, and, he remembered you. Those memories, coaches, players, and, of course, cheerleaders, all populated his thoughts. You were remembered and spoken of highly. Thank you for those memories. He will be missed, and I will miss him the most. Our visits were infrequent, but fun, and always ended with "goodbye. I love you, brother" You were the best brother and my best friend. And now, for one last time, I have to say "goodbye. I love you, brother". (Tommy)"
