Mary Ann taught Physical Education at Rock Island Washington Junior High for 38 years before retirement in 1995. She was a part of the Illinois Teacher's Retirement group and an active member of Chapter LH P.E.O Sisterhood. In her free time, she enjoyed swimming at the YMCA.
Mary Ann was married to Francis Joseph Capra on November 5, 1955 and divorced. She married Max Ferdinand Nordeen June 16, 1965 and was divorced.
Mary Ann leaves behind her older brother, Louis Arthur (Rosalind Matthey) Van Houten; her nieces and nephews; and her cousin James Van Young of Lee's Summit, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karla Ann Capra (1956-1986); her parents; and her younger brother, George W. Van Houten, Jr.
Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded. A committal memorial service was held on Monday, April 12, at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery having proceeded from the Weerts Funeral Home.
