Joann was born April 14, 1931 to Henry and Hannah (Bohms) Becker and grew up on the family homestead east of Oldham, SD. She was baptized and confirmed in the Oldham Lutheran Church. Joann graduated from Oldham High School and attended General Beadle State College in Madison, SD where she received her teaching certificate. She always wanted to be a teacher, first teaching in a country school before moving to Lake Preston, where she served the school in various roles for many years.
On June 5, 1955 she was united in marriage to Wendell Helland in the Oldham Lutheran Church. They were married for 53 years before Wendell passed away in 2008. They enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling in which they visited all 50 states.
Joann was an active member in the Lake Preston Lutheran Church and the Porter L. Rich Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and genealogy. In her later years she enjoyed playing cards.
