Joan E. Charron, 91, of Ravenna suffered a massive stroke on April 22 and passed away on Friday, April 23, 2021 at CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha.

She had been residing with her family in rural Ravenna.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the Congregational Church in Ravenna. Pastor Jeff Zinnel will officiate. Burial will be in the Sodtown Cemetery near Ravenna.

Joan Charron was born July 6, 1929 in Grand Island, NE to Herman and Grace (Crooks) Zlomke.

She married Harold W. Charron on November 16, 1947 in Grand Island.

They farmed near Central City until 1959, when the family moved to their current home near Ravenna.

She was a homemaker and the mother of nine children. She taught them their manners, the importance of kindness and consideration for others and proper use of the English language. She sewed their dresses and patched their jeans. Joan always raised a big garden and preserved vast quantities of fruit and vegetables to feed her family as well as maintaining a steady supply of homemade bread.

In the earlier years she started her day by braiding five heads of hair before sending the girls off to school on their ponies. She taught her children the importance of reading and often read to them in the evening.

As the years went by she learned to milk cows, feed calves and help with chores and could often be seen raking hay on a windy day in her dress and apron-her daily attire.

Joan's favorite pastime was embroidery. In her later years she embroidered individual sets of tea towels for all of her children and grandchildren.

Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they never left her house without a warm and loving hug and there was always a special note in their birthday cards.

Left to mourn her passing are her nine children and their families, Linda Cone (Rick) of Hickory, NC; Kathy Hill (Dwight) of Spivey, KS; Susan Allemang (Doug) of Bartlett, NE; Janet Gideon (Melvin) of Burwell; Marcia Cone of Ravenna; Bill Charron (Dawn) of Burwell; Laura Taylor (John) of Taylor, NE; Joe Charron (Jeni) of Ravenna and Dan Charron of Scottsbluff. At last count there were 32 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Donald Zlomke of Baltimore, MD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, Aubrey and Dean Zlomke; sister, Elaine Olson; three grandsons; David Hill, Wes Gideon and Tyler Cone and a great grandson, Damon Gideon.
