Salem - Dolores "Becky" Joan Beckmann, of Salem, died peacefully, early on the morning of April 22, 2021 - a wonderful, caring, independent, and determined woman, who lived her life to the fullest.
Becky, the younger of two children, was born to, Arno and Alice Beckmann, on July 29, 1932. She grew up in Moline, IL, and graduated from Moline High School. She then moved on to attend Iowa State Teacher's College, in Cedar Rapids, (now University of Northern Iowa). After graduating from college, Becky began her 34-year career, teaching English, Speech, and Drama, and directing student theater productions, in both Junior High and High School. Becky's years teaching, were primarily spent in Moline, except for a two year period teaching in Beaumont, TX. Throughout her career as a teacher, Becky was admired as an advocate, a mentor, and an inspiration to her students. She was known to reach out to help when a student was struggling through difficult times - she truly cared for her students.
Becky loved and was deeply involved in theater - as a college student, as a teacher, and as a member of the community. Throughout her four years in college she participated in numerous theater productions presented by the Drama Department. As a teacher, Becky nurtured and directed her students through many plays, at least 52 during her 26 years at Moline High School. In the Moline community, Becky, will be remembered as a founding member, of the Richmond Hill Community Theater, of Geneseo, IL., and as a very active participant in the Quad City Music Guild, of Moline. Through these venues, Becky was involved with the production of numerous stage shows and musicals. She was very hard working and versatile - acting at times as director, stage manager, sound and light technician, scene painter, costume designer and volunteer office staff. Because of her hard work and dedication, she was honored by the Music Guild Hall of Fame.
After retiring from teaching, in 1988, Becky made some changes in her life and left Moline, to move to Salem, OR. She was leaving the snow and ice of the Midwest, to enjoy the milder climate and the many new opportunities, that the northwest offered. Becky brought with her to Salem, her many volunteer interests in theater, the arts, and community, and she was soon volunteering with the Pentacle Theater, assisting with several productions. She also volunteered with the Mid-Valley Arts Council - learning new computer skills - the YMCA's Y Service Club. She was active in many capacities at St. Mark Lutheran Church, including, among other things, editing the church newsletter, serving on the church council and Lutheran Fine Arts Committee.
For a time, after coming to Salem, she served as a volunteer editor and scriptwriter, for a former student from Texas, who was an independent television producer, of outdoor documentaries. This offered her the added opportunity for travel to the Caribbean and to northern reaches of North America.
Other travels that Becky enjoyed, were excursions through countries of northern Europe, including trips to Germany, to explore her German ancestry and to meet her relatives there.
Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Arno; and her brother, Bernard, and his wife, Jane.
Many, many thanks, to Mary Anne Spradlin, who opened her home to Becky, in order to provide hospice care, for Becky's last few weeks of life. Mary Anne, with the support of Willamette Valley Hospice, First Call Home Health Care, and friends, was able to honor Becky's choice of comfort care and relief of pain, for her final days.
Becky requested that there be no services. Her many friends plan to gather to celebrate Becky's life, in late July, 2021.
