United States Naval Officer. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy class of 1935. David H. McClintock married Mary Kirby Patterson in 1938 and they were married for over 50 years until her death in 1938.
McClintock spent most of his 30-year career in the Navy Submarine Service. During WWII he served as the Commanding Office of the submarine the USS Darter. While on patrol the Darter contacted and reported the approach of the Japanese Fleet enroute to Leyte Gulf in the Pacific near the Philippine Islands. Once General MacArthur had been alerted, the Darter fired the first shot of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, a salvo of torpedoes sinking the Heavy Cruiser Atago the flagship of the Japanese Commander-in-Chief and heavily damaged a second cruiser. The attack took place October 24, 1944 in uncharted waters and the Darter ran aground on Bombay Shoal. A historic nighttime rescue then took place by her sister sub the USS Dace. All hands of the Darter's crew were rescued with the use of an inflatable raft in this heroic event.
For heroism in command, Captain McClintock was awarded the Navy Cross and the Bronze Star. Captain McClintock was also awarded the Silver Star, the Gold Star and numerous other decorations and medals while in the Navy.
After his retirement from the Navy in 1965, Captain McClintock became the Director of Development at Northern Michigan University and played a key roll in the expansion of the University's campus in the late 1960's.
