Evelyn Patricia Hampton was born on January 20, 1941 to the late Willie Marsh and Evelyn Campbell (who passed during childbirth) in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Although she was born an only child, Evelyn was raised by her grandparents, the late Eddie and Pearlie Campbell, along with her four aunts and uncles, Juanita, Eddie Jr, Legrant and Carolyn. From birth, she was affectionately known as "Sweet Baby," because she had been named after her sweet mother. She was so loved by her aunts and uncles with whom she was raised, she was considered the fifth sibling.
Known for her energy, Evelyn loved sports and played basketball during her high school years at Gary High School where she graduated as Salutatorian in 1958. After earning her diploma, Evelyn moved to Washington, D.C. where she lived with her uncle and his wife, the late Legrant and Gladys Campbell. Shortly thereafter, Evelyn met and married Henry Roberts, Sr. in 1961. From that union, two children were born; Henry Jr. (Robbie), and Jana.
Evelyn furthered her studies at Temple Business School and at the Atlantic Business School, where she mastered technical writing. Evelyn also completed coursework from the University of the District of Columbia and the University of Northern Virginia. During this time, she worked as a ward secretary at Providence Hospital before taking a secretarial position with the Central Intelligence Agency in 1964. During her career with the Agency, she took on a variety of challenging assignments, crossed over into the computer programming field, and had the opportunity to travel to Central Europe. She retired in 1998 after 34 years of dedicated service. Following her retirement, she served ten years as the Office Manager for Pallison Associates where she provided technical services to various companies.
Evelyn was a worldwide traveler, and a cruise connoisseur. She traveled to Greece, Switzerland, South Africa, England, Germany and France. Her cruise destinations included the Cayman Islands, Hawaii, St. Martin, the Bahamas, and Puerto Rico. When she wasn't preparing for her next excursion, Evelyn would engage in one of her many past-times. She loved planting flowers, shopping, reading and praising God.
Evelyn gave her life to Christ at an early age while attending Salem Baptist Church in South Carolina. When she moved to Fort Washington, Maryland in 1973, Evelyn united with Fort Foote Baptist Church (FFBC). Every time the doors of Fort Foote opened, Evelyn was there and ready to serve. She attended Sunday School and Bible Study weekly; and rarely missed a Sunday service. She was a Sunday School Teacher; and was highly involved in the Women's Ministry. After her battles with breast cancer, God laid it on her heart to initiate the Cancer Support Ministry. Evelyn was unwavering in her commitment to her church family. In 2018, she was one of several women recognized as a Legacy Mother by Fort Foote Baptist Church. For over 47 years, Evelyn remained a faithful servant and member of FFBC.
Evelyn loved her family and friends. She loved to stay in contact via telephone. She telephoned her loved ones in South Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, New York and Nevada, regularly…just to name a few. It was common for her to connect with fifty or more of her friends in any given week. Some of her closest friends received more than one call a day. Her children and grandchildren would often find her asleep with the phone at her ear. Evelyn valued her connections with others and was considered a social butterfly.
Evelyn never missed a family gathering. From birthdays to holidays, she loved to plan events for, and with her family. She and her cousin, Joyce, planned the very first Sally Little Family Reunion. Being in the company of those she loved brought her great joy. She would often invite close friends and family to spend the night with her, even when they lived around the corner. Those stopping by her home would not be surprised to be greeted by her grandson, Jamal, or her great grandson, Amir. Evelyn was known to be a softie for them. Spoiling her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was her claim to fame. Keeping their secrets, especially from Jan and Robbie, amused her immensely.
Evelyn loved a great debate, enjoyed being right and loved having the last word. She was known to be sassy-classy, always dressed from head to toe, a true diva. After her car accident in 2019, she had a fit when she had to discontinue wearing her three-inch heels and adamantly refused to use a walker or a cane. Though her physical health deteriorated, Evelyn's smile and spunk never wavered.
On Sunday, April 11, 2021 Evelyn passed away quietly into the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, while at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, MD. She leaves to cherish her memories, a son Henry Roberts of Montgomery Village, MD, a daughter Jana Roberts (Jonathon) of Denver, NC, two aunts/sisters Juanita Page of Durham, NC, and Carolyn Van Norden of Willingboro, NJ; one Goddaughter, Mia Elam of Willingboro, NJ; five grandchildren, George Glenn Johnson (Alexandria), Jamal Bullock, Denzel Roberts, Cameron Roberts and Jazzmin Lee; five great-grandchildren; Amir, Janiyah, Kennedi, Jayden, Chase, and Victoria, her dear friend, Josephine Rolle; two spiritual daughters; Denise Williams and Cherie Rodgers, a spiritual son, Russell Jones and a host of family and friends.
