Richard Dale Owen, 88, of Lake Charles was called by God from this earthly world in the comfort of his own home with family by his side on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Mr. Owen is survived by his three sons; Richard Dale II (Jeri) of Sulphur, Alan Drew (Elizabeth) of Beaumont, TX, and John Christopher (Katherine) of Lake Charles; eight grandchildren: Sandra Manuel, Jason Hale, Heather Roberts, Tiffany David, Andrew Owen, Grace Owen, Meredith Owen, Sarah Owen, six great grandchildren and many other loved great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Willie Lee "Billie" Hamilton Owen of 68 years; sister, Maxine Owen Wilcox and granddaughter Melissa Owen.

Richard was born on April 10, 1932, in Jefferson, Texas to Robert L. "Bob" and Johnnie Spradley Owen. Richard, or "Dale" as he was known by many, was the eldest brother of his siblings and cherished his time in growing up in the oil fields where one might be sent to catch a bucket of "drip" to help keep a little fuel in the car.

He loved his Merryville Highschool where he played basketball and football as the quarterback. Dale was very popular being voted most handsome both his junior and senior years. Following high school, he served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and married "Billie" Hamilton of Newton, TX, during his enlistment. After his military service, he attended McNeese State (1958) and began his dream career of education. He continued his professional development and earned his Master's Degree in Education and Administration from LSU in 1962. Richard served as teacher, principal, and school board administrator for more than 40 years. He also served as interim principal of Immaculate Conception Catholic School (ICCS) in 1984 at the request of Msgr. Irving DeBlanc. He had a significant and positive impact on many lives throughout his career in education.

Richard loved to work in his pristine yard and grew the most beautiful gardens and roses imaginable. He was especially proud of his home-grown tomatoes and broad leaf mustard greens. He also loved fishing almost as much as his dad, Bob. He was a man that had every tool. More importantly, he knew how to use each of them. There is a memory of him diagnosing the neighbor's engine problem by placing one end of a dowl rod on the engine block and the other to his ear. He said, "needs oil."

Dad has always been known as a man of his word and for standing behind his promises. His love for his family and his model as a father remains an example for generations to follow. His light in this world will persist in our hearts and memories. "Fair winds and following seas and long may your big jib draw!"
