He was born in St. Mary, KY, one of ten children to Joseph Edgar and Mary Ethel (Mattingly) Browning.
Michael dedicated 20 years of his life to the U.S. Navy, after which he retired as Chief CSC of Commissary. Afterward he worked for many years and retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company and National Tobacco Company, where he was known for his catchphrase "It don't get no better than this!". He was a wonderful gardener and a clever jack-of-all-trades, the fixer of all cars and appliances until the computer age made that difficult.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Ledwell, Gladys Mattingly, Nancy Osborne, Rita Browning and Grace Brady; and brothers Sam, John, Ben and Ed Browning.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Ann Mudd Browning; son Michael G. Browning (Paul); daughters, Julia Clay (Mitchell), Angie Murden (Duke), Beth Browning (his best friend) and Margaret Paulino (Gilbert); 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
A walk-through visitation will be held on Thursday, April 22nd from 4-7 pm, at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd, St. Matthews in Louisville.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 23rd, at 9:30 am at St. Louis Bertrand Church, 1104 S. 6th Street in Louisville with strict social distancing and masking guidelines in place due to Covid-19.
He will be laid to rest after the Mass, at 12:30 pm in Lebanon National Cemetery, with military honors to be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard. Current cemetery guidelines permit only 10 family members under the pavilion; while others may stand near the pavilion.
