Born in Pickens County, she was a daughter of the late James Henry Carmen and Addie Simmons Carmen and a member of Calvary Hill Baptist Church in Easley.
Surviving are daughters, Martha B. Holliday and husband, Jim, of Six Mile, Sara B. Holliday and husband, Lloyd, of Easley; son, Claude T. "Tommy" Bates Jr. and wife, Gertie Nabors Bates of Easley; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Dr. J. Ray and Donna Jones Holliday and Jon, Leigh H. and Bob Thomas, Holliday and Howie, Dr. Russell and Linda Holliday, Alex and Hanna, Ryan Holliday, Byron and Stacie Bates, Ada and Colleen, Paula and Jamie Bay; Amanda Bates White and Dylan.
Mrs. Bates was predeceased by two children, James H. "Jimmy" Bates and infant Robert E. "Bobby" Bates; and two brothers, Gene and J.T. Carmen.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens with the Reverend Paul Turner officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday prior to the graveside service at the funeral home.
