Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 16, 1865 for "gallant services in the recent campaigns in Georgia and South Carolina".
