Roberta Jean Smith age 85, of Manistique, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Saturday morning April 17, 2021, at UP- Health Systems – Marquette. Roberta was born in Manistique, on August 15, 1935 the daughter of Malcolm C. and Elsie (Leppanen) Nelson. She attended Manistique Area Schools and graduated with the class of 1953. On April 18, 1959, she married Donald R. Smith at St Francis de Sales Parish, in Manistique, and they made their home and raised their three children in Thompson, MI. Don and Roberta were married 54 years and he preceded her in death on June 11, 2013.

Roberta was a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish of Manistique. Actively involved with her children, she served as a Secretary of the Hiawatha PTA, as a 4-H leader, and as a Girl Scout leader. She served many years as an election inspector for Thompson Township. Roberta was a member of the Manistique Moose Lodge and served as a past Chaplin and Senior Regent of the Women of the Moose of Manistique. She was a "competitive" card player, and an avid reader. Roberta played on the women's horseshoe leagues in Manistique for many years. She and Don loved to go camping and she was the co-founder of the Happy Wanderers RV Club. Most important to Roberta however were her children and especially her beloved grandchildren.

Roberta is survived by her daughter; Debra (Lee) Vaughn of Manistique, sons; Thomas (Ellen) Smith of Holmes Beach, FL, and Michael (Lisa) Smith of Metamora, MI, 5 grandchildren; Leanne (Bret) Widdis, Greg Vaughn, Alexander Smith, Caitlin Smith, Tara Carto, and great grandson; Graham Widdis, and another great grandchild on the way, sisters-in-law; Shirley Nelson, and Maryann Nelson, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Don, Roberta was preceded in death by her parents, Malcolm and Elsie Nelson, brothers; Robert, M. Conrad, and Dr. Denton Nelson.

Graveside services for Roberta will be held on Saturday April 24, 2021 at 11:00AM, at the Thompson Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Roberta's name may be made to Friends of Indian Lake, c/o Ralph Lundquist 10639 S.75 Road, Rapid River, MI 49878, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
