Shirley Allen, 89, of Marshalltown, died on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Grandview Heights Rehab and Healthcare under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown.

Born Shirley Jean Davis on April 6, 1932, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of William and Gladys (Mann) Davis. From a young age, Shirley dreamed of becoming a wife and mother, and she was a wonderful one. She married Richard "Dick" Allen on September 16, 1948, in Eldora and they raised their sons in Marshalltown.

She adored spending time with her husband and family. Shirley was an excellent cook, she loved plants and flowers, and enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. Shirley also loved hanging out with friends and family and will forever be remembered for her loving heart and great soul. She had tremendous grace under pressure, handling anything life threw her way with strength and resilience.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Richard Allen Jr., Stephen Allen, and Dennis Allen, all of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Jamie Birkness, Ann Allen, and Richard Allen III; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Marcene Holder.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Dick; sons, Douglas Allen and Brian O'Donnell; mother and stepfather, Gladys and Floyd Abrams; her father, William Davis; daughter-in-law, Marcy Allen; brother-in-law, Larry Holder; and in-laws, Fred and Grace Allen.
