PEKIN ~ Daryl Joan Smith, 89, of Pekin, passed away at 3:16 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2021 at her home in the arms of loving family. Born August 15, 1931 in Springfield to Robert and Peg (Meets) Horner, she married Ralph F. Smith on September 12, 1953 in Pekin. He died November 2, 2009 in Pekin. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather (Charles and Peg Frings).

Surviving are two sons, Mark (Kayla) Smith of Arlington, Texas and Paul Smith of Fountain Valley, California; one daughter, Stacia (Dave) Gambetti of Pekin; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one sister, Judy Archdale of Fort Myers, Florida.

Joan was a 1949 graduate of Pekin Community High School. She continued her education at Evanston Hospital School of Nursing at Northwestern University, graduating in 1953.

She had worked as an R.N. for Dr. Weimer, Dr. Taubert, Dr. Rhoades and Dr. Mitzelfelt for over 36 years, retiring in 1988.

Joan enjoyed traveling with her husband, Ralph, who was her best friend and the love of her life. Family meant everything to her. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader who kept the library and bookstore staff on their toes. She will always be remembered as a patient, compassionate and loving person.

Joan was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin.

Inurnment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg at a later date.
