James was born April 1, 1931, in Laurens City, South Carolina. He worked for the State of North Carolina, and was a member of Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church.
James was preceded in death by brothers Samuel Rivers and Willie Conwell, and sister Betty Ann Conwell; and by a son, Jimmy Rivers, Jr.
He is survived by children Lonnie Rivers (Susan) of California, Larry Rivers (Johnsie) of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Janet Rivers Rosario, Pamela Rivers Williams and Shawn Rivers all of Asheville, North Carolina; sister Eula Mae Thomas of Charlotte, North Carolina; and grandchildren Tameika Gibson of Asheville, Ana Shere Rivers of Asheville, Lawrence, Myia and Darius Rivers of Winston Salem, Brandon Williams of Asheville, Sheena Rivers of Oklahoma, Avalon Rivers of California, Darien Williams of Asheville, Lynsie Williams of Asheville, and Nicholas and Christopher Rosario of Asheville.
A service will be held in remembrance at a later date.
