BARNES - Anna (Annie) E., age 88, formerly of Port Jefferson Station, passed away on April 10, 2021 in Bradenton, Florida. She had moved to Florida seven months ago and lived with her daughter Bibiana and son-in-law Richard Cloonan. She peacefully passed while on home hospice. Born September of 1932 in Locust Valley, NY to Czechoslovakian immigrant parents, Annie had 3 other siblings, Mary, Peter, and Frank, who all preceded her in death. Anna graduated summa cum laude from Glen Cove High School, NY in 1951. Her nickname was The Brain. She was active in the high school theater group and enjoyed art. After high school, she entered nursing school at St. Clare's Hospital NYC and graduated a Diploma Nurse in 1954, specializing in the operating room. She worked at Glen Cove Community Hospital until June of 1965 when she and her husband John, who she married June of 1958, moved to Suffolk County to their new home on New York Avenue in Port Jefferson Station. She went on to work at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY for 30 years, retiring in June of 1995.When off-shift, she was known as the Nurse of New York Avenue. It was not uncommon for neighbors to call her and ask for advice regarding medical problems or for bandages and treatment. She treated many a wound at the neighborhood park on Oak Street and saved a few lives over the years. Caring for others was her life.She was the loving wife of the late John J. Barnes (deceased in 1999) for over 40 years. She was the caring mother of the late John D. (deceased in 2020); Michael A. of Binghamton, NY; William H. of Easton, PA' Bibiana Cloonan of Bradenton, FL; and George S. of Wilton Manor, FL. She is also survived by her three grandchildren Elle Barnes, Sara Cloonan, and Elijah Barnes. Due to the pandemic, she will be cremated in Bradenton, FL with interment at Holy Sepulchre in Coram, NY later this June.
